Hydropower Plants on the Xallas River

Spain

Galicia, in the north-western part of Spain, is – with the annual rainfall of more than 2,100 l/m2 – the rainiest region of the country which offers very attractive conditions for hydropower plants. We operate 9 hydropower plants on the Xallas River on just 16 km of its watercourse.

Thanks to the 4 dams and the cascade system, it is possible to perfectly utilise the potential of the river, to optimise revenue and power generation according to the needs of the transmission system, and to offer support services, the need for which is increasing proportionally to the growing share of the variable renewable sources in the grid.

The river is regulated mainly by the Fervenza and Santa Uxía reservoirs and two small functional reservoirs, Ponte Olveira and Castrelo.
